COOKIES

Cookies are small strings of text that visited sites send to the user’s device (usually the browser), where they are stored and re-sent to the same sites the next time the user visits. In addition to cookies, other similar tools (web beacons/web bugs, clear GIFs, and others) capable of identifying the user or their device are also subject to the provisions of the Italian Data Protection Authority.

While browsing a website, users may also receive cookies sent to their device by other websites or web servers (known as “third parties”), which may contain certain elements (e.g. images, maps, sounds, and specific links to pages in other domains) found on the website the user is visiting.

Cookies are usually found in very large numbers in users’ browsers and can sometimes remain there for long periods of time. They are used for various purposes: to run computer authentication, to monitor sessions, to save information on specific settings for users who access the server, etc. Further information on cookies can be found at www.allaboutcookies.org.

To regulate these cookies properly, it is necessary to tell them apart, as there are no technical characteristics which differentiate them from each other according to their intended uses. However, steps in this direction have been taken by the legislator who, by implementing the provisions contained in Directive 2009/136/EC, has established the obligation to acquire informed, prior consent from users to the installation of cookies used for purposes which are not purely technical (see Article 1, paragraph 5, letter a) of Ital. Legislative Decree No. 69 of 28 May 2012, which amended Article 122 of the Code).

Types of cookies

Browsing cookies - First-party cookies

These cookies ensure normal browsing and use of the website, and allow a connection to be established between the server and the user’s browser. They allow the site to function correctly and enable the contents to be viewed on the user’s device. Without these cookies, certain requested functions, e.g. site log-in or the creation of an online shopping basket may not be available. Browsing cookies are technical cookies and are required for the website to work.

Cookies to Manage User Databases

This type of service enables the Data Controller to build user profiles, starting from an e-mail address, a name or any other information the User provides to CIRFOOD, and to track the User’s activities via statistical functions. This Personal Data could also be cross-referenced with publicly available information on the User (e.g. profiles on social networks) and used to build private profiles the Data Controller can view and use to improve CIRFOOD.

Some of these services could also allow programmed e-mails to be sent to the User, such as e-mails based on specific actions taken at CIRFOOD.

Functional cookies - First-party cookies

These cookies are stored on your computer or other device, at the user's request, to save the choices you make in order to optimise and provide an improved personalised browsing experience within the service or access to this website (e.g. registering a password for restricted areas, saving the products placed in your shopping basket so they will still be there when you return for a later session, saving the selected language, watching a video, or being able to comment on the blog, etc). Functional cookies are not essential for running the website. However, they improve browsing quality and experience.

Third-party cookies

The Facebook Pixel uses both first-party cookies, owned by the website you are currently viewing, and third-party cookies belonging to different websites (other than the one you are viewing); whereas the Facebook Pixel is an analytics tool used to collect statistical data, measuring the effectiveness of the advertising by tracking users interaction with the website, the use of both first and third-party cookies allow to be more accurate in reporting.
